Will a lithium-ion battery energy storage system be installed in Côte d'Ivoire?
A lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) made by Saft will be installed at a 37.5MWp solar PV power plant in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). It is the African country’s first-ever large-scale solar project and the batteries will be used to smooth and integrate the variable output of the PV modules for export to the local electricity grid.

"We also endeavoured to create employment for the local population," emphasises KfW Project Manager Clara Winkler-Tomety. During the construction phase, 75% of the workers came from the region. The new solar power plant in Côte d'Ivoire is helping to achieve the goals of German development cooperation in the expansion of renewable energies.
Where is Ivorian power plant located?
Located in Boundiali in the north of the country, the plant has already been providing up to 37MW of power since June 2023. It was officially launched this week by Ivorian Prime Minister Beugré Mambé and German Parliamentary State Secretary Bärbel Kofler.
How much money does Côte d'Ivoire get from KfW Development Bank?
KfW Development Bank is financing the project with EUR 37 million, including a loan of EUR 27 million on behalf of the German Federal Government and a grant of EUR 10 million on behalf of the European Union. Côte d'Ivoire is contributing five million euros from its own budget.
