The integration of solar power across European countries does not provide significant benefits because generation patterns within the continent are homogeneous and the Southern countries have both higher and more consistent solar resource.
Can solar PV and wind contribute to virtual energy storage gain?
We show that suitable shares of solar PV, wind and hydropower combined with spatiotemporal coordination of production across Europe can induce virtual energy storage gain (VSEG) that widely exceeds that available in the current hydropower reservoirs.
Does wind power provide a minimum energy storage demand?
For Europe, we found that 2–3 times more wind power than solar power provides an appropriate complement to existing hydropower systems, resulting in a minimum energy storage demand.
Can offshore wind and PV solar energy improve the stability of the resource?
Therefore, it is important to mention that the present manuscript represents the first step in the development of offshore hybrid systems based on wind and PV solar resource on the western Iberian Peninsula. The current study showed that the combination of offshore wind and PV solar energy improved the stability of the resource along the year.
