How does battery balancing work?
Battery balancing works by redistributing charge among the cells in a battery pack to achieve a uniform state of charge. The process typically involves the following steps: Cell monitoring: The battery management system (BMS) continuously monitors the voltage and sometimes temperature of each cell in the pack.
Does a lithium ion battery have a balance problem?
If you built a lithium-ion battery and its capacity is not what you expect, then you more than likely have a balance issue. While it's true that cells connected in parallel will find their own natural balance, the same is not true for cells wired in series. Battery cells in series have no way of transferring energy between one another.
What does a battery circuit board do?
The circuit board is, most likely, a battery management system to ensure that batteries are charged in a balanced fashion. When each cell reaches a predetermined voltage (indicating sufficient charge state) that cell is effectively bypassed for the rest of the charge cycle. This prevents over-charging and resultant damage or fire. Figure 1.
Does a battery balancing system need a BMS?
However, most lithium batteries do not have such built-in cell balancing capabilities and will require the BMS to perform this function. If the BMS is not able to properly balance the cells in a battery pack, it can cause cell damage and even failure.
Why do batteries need a balancing circuit?
The theory is that balanced cells all discharge at the same rate, and therefore cut-off at the same voltage every time. This isn’t always true, so having a balancing circuit (or PCM/BMS) ensures that upon charging, the battery cells can be fully balanced to maintain the battery’s design capacity and to become fully charged.
Why do lithium batteries need a PCB board?
