A power reserve is used in a PV system to assist in frequency regulation and improve under frequency response during low system inertia periods.
Does grid-tied PV participate in frequency regulation?
Grid-tied PV operating in Maximum Power Point (MPP) mode do not have any stored energy to participate in frequency regulation. To enable PV to participate in frequency regulation, it needs to be de-loaded, allowing a portion of its power output to be used for this purpose.
How is power derived from a PV system in MPPT mode?
In MPPT mode, power from the PV system is derived by operating it at the Maximum Power Point (MPP). The de-load period of the PV system is decided based on varying system inertia and PV penetration level. At peak PV penetration, the system's inertial decline drastically, resulting in fast frequency transients when the system is subjected to power imbalance.
When should PV participate in frequency response?
PV should participate in frequency response only during low inertia period. The PV is constantly de-loaded, this may end up with forfeiting economic benefit from PV. Also in these studies, PV is de-loaded without considering effective system inertia constant.
