Energy storage company Solar MD has officially opened the first gigawatt factory on the continent, capable of producing up to 3GWh of energy storage annually. The 15,000-square-metre factory, located in Cape Town, has been operational since July. However, it was officially inaugurated on Saturday, 30 November 2024.

Who makes a battery in Cape Town?
The second-largest battery assembly plant is owned Balancell, which recently upgraded its production facility in Cape Town to support up to 1GWh output per year. Balancell’s biggest customer is Toyota Material Handling, while other well-known customers include Cape Fruit, Clicks Nestle, Shoprite, Spar, and Pick n Pay.
Why should Cape Town invest in solar power?
“Not only does this investment fuel Cape Town’s drive towards a smarter, cleaner and more secure energy future, but it also makes this metro the base for the production of these batteries that are exported into Africa and Europe.” Solar MD says the factory can produce up to 3GWh of energy storage in a year.
Does South Africa manufacture batteries?
Technically speaking, South Africa has no facilities that can manufacture batteries from start to finish. That is because there is no plant producing the cells that form the basic building blocks of batteries.
How much has solar MD invested in Cape Town?
As per the City of Cape Town, Solar MD has invested more than R150 million into its developments since opening in 2015. The company plans to invest nearly R1 billion over the next five years.
