How many lithium ion cells are in a volt pack?

The Volt pack, branded “Voltec” by GM uses a total of 288 lithium-ion pouch-type cells assembled into four modules. Each cell is separated by a plastic frame on one side and an aluminum cooling fin on the other side.

What are lithium ion batteries made of?

In lithium-ion batteries, the substrate is often a very thin film of aluminum. The anode is the “negative” half of the battery cell and is usually made up of a thin copper substrate that is coated with the active anode material.

How to insulate a battery pack?

After the cells are assembled, the whole battery pack needs to be fixed with insulating sheets. The reason why the epoxy sheet is selected as the outer casing of the battery pack instead of steel or aluminum one is that although these materials are beautiful and sturdy, it is hard to guarantee the well combination of the battery cells.

How much SoC does a lithium ion pack have?

In other words, if a cell is shipped at 3.7 V and 100% SOC, by the time it reaches the pack manufacturer it may be down to 99.5% SOC (purely for explanation purposes). So for a large lithium-ion pack that is made up of hundreds or thousands of cells, the cells may all arrive at the pack integrator at very slightly different states of charge.
